Ward Valley Estate

The Ward Valley Estate is an exciting young winery set up in 2008 by native New Zealander Freddy Davidson. Located in the south of Marlborough, the Ward is much cooler than the northern part of the region.  With its water retentive, clay based soils, long dry summers and cooling climate, Freddy chose the Ward Valley because it provides a perfect microclimate for the production of quality Pinot Noir. Freddy works alongside specialist consultant winemaker David Clouston and expert viticulturist John Hickman to develop the Ward Valley and to showcase its ability to produce world class wines. At current the estate consists of 20 hectares, planted with both Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc grapes.


The team are particularly excited about their site located at the foothills of Mt Victoria. ‘Mt Victoria Block’ has produced excellent quality fruit in its first two vintages and has serious potential to produce spectacular wines in the years to come. The hand picked grapes are fermented in small open top fermenters, after which the wine is lightly pressed, before being aged in 100% French oak for ten  months. The resulting wine is vibrant with great purity and freshness, it is fruit driven with hints of spice and a savoury finish. A fantastic insight into the potential of the Ward Valley as competitive Pinot Noir producers, with the ability to become benchmark wines within the Marlborough region!

(Pinot Noir ‘Mt Victoria Black’ 2015) “Aromas of dark raspberries and cherries entwined with a layer of dark herbs with subtle whole bunch stalk notes, revealing dark red florals, liquorice and savoury, nutty oak. Medium-bodied, this has a rounded and well-packed heart with sweet, dark-red berry fruits including cherries and raspberries, harmoniously intermingling with delicate herb and stalk elements, and lifted red florals. The mouthfeel is bright and lively with fine-grained tannin structure in support, and balanced acidity providing the energy to carry the wine to a juicy, refreshing red cherry, red liquorice and floral finish.
