Salcheto

Salcheto is named after the Salcheto stream that runs through this hilly, 72 hectare property. Located in the heart of Montepulciano, Salcheto is dedicated to Sangiovese in the clonal guise of Prugnolo Gentile: the soul of Vino Nobile. Prugnolo Gentile differs from other Sangiovese clones in Tuscany offering softer, more plum-like flavours than the usual black cherry. If we are allowed a sweeping generalisation, Prugnolo Gentile provides a mid-ground between the robustness of Brunello and the elegance of Chianti.

Under the management of Michele Manelli, Salcheto has become the epitome of environmental efficiency. It is the first estate in the whole of Italy to be fully self-sustainable and their energy independent cellars are a model of innovation and efficiency. Even the bottles they use are the lightest and most economically friendly bottles available!

All Salcheto’s wines are made with a low quantity of sulphites and fermented using indigenous yeasts. The Vino Nobile’s are made from 100% Prugnolo Gentile, while their Chianti contains Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Mammolo, and Merlot. And more recently they have released a range of natural wines under the label ‘Obvius’, without the use of sulphites. Salcheto’s range all share accuracy, a great deal of finesse, and phenomenal drinkability.

(Vino Nobile di Montepulciano 2022) “Focused and nicely structured, with aromas of red plums, forest floor, crushed violets and tobacco that carry into a medium- to full-bodied palate. The tannins are firm but integrated, holding a vivid line of acidity that gives the finish clarity and tension. From organically grown grapes. Sustainable. Drink or hold.” 92 points, James Suckling (September 2025)

“The 2021 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Salco is dark and moody, mixing plum and cherry sauce with sweet lavender and sage. It’s vibrant but refined, with brisk acidity invigorating its savory red berry fruits and saline mineral tones. Chewy and exceptionally long, the 2021 resonates with tension as black tea-like tannins and a bitter twang fade. So youthful today, the Salco is beautifully balanced and built for the cellar.” 94 points, Eric Guido, Vinous (May 2026)
