Located in the picturesque commune of Charly-sur-Marne, the family estate of Jean de la Fountaine has now passed through three generations of the family. The winery is now run by sisters Aline, Claire and Lise Baron, who have not taken on this inheritance lightly. Prior to taking over they spent many years studying and getting their qualifications in order to prepare themselves for the job.
Having completed her masters in Applied Foreign Languages in Business and Trade, Claire takes after her Uncle Gilbert and has taken up the position of Sales Manager. Lise has a degree in Biology and her National Diploma of Oenologist (DNO). Aline has a BA in biochemistry, a masters degree in microbiology and her National Diploma of Oenologist. Together Lise and Aline take care of the estate whilst oversee all vinification and cellar management. This family trio are a force when working together, their wines reflect their wealth of experience in both winemaking precision and reflection of their ethos.
As was their Grandfather Albert Baron’s vision, the sisters work with the aim to pass on a healthy earth to future generations. And have recently become one of a select few in Champagne to gain their ‘Sustainable Viticulture in Champagne certification and “HVE” (High Value Envirommental)’. They cultivate 55 hectares of vineyard land, consisting of Pinot Meunier, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vines. As governed by the Appellation rules in Champagne, all the grapes are hand harvested and carefully transported to the winery where each variety is vinified separately and if destined for a blend, blended according to taste. They have invested in cutting edge equipment which allows them to work with minimal intervention in order to express best their terroir.
The L’Éloquente Jean de la Fontaine Brut is a beautifully elegant cuvée which showcases the Pinot Meunier grape at 70% of the blend, balanced out perfectly with smaller proportions of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Ideal as an aperitif or a perfect match for shellfish!
