Salcheto is named after the Salcheto stream that runs through this hilly, 21 hectare property. Located in the heart of Montepulciano, Salcheto is dedicated to Sangiovese in the clonal guise of Prugnolo Gentile: the soul of Vino Nobile. Prugnolo Gentile differs from other Sangiovese clones in Tuscany offering softer, more plum-like flavours than the usual black cherry. If we are allowed a sweeping generalisation, Prugnolo Gentile provides a mid-ground between the robustness of Brunello and the elegance of Chianti.

Under the management of Michele Manelli, Salcheto has become the epitome of environmental efficiency. It is the first estate in the whole of Italy to be fully self-sustainable and their energy independent cellars are a model of innovation and efficiency. Even the bottles they use are the lightest and most economically friendly bottles available!

All Salcheto’s wines are made without the use of sulphites and fermented using indigenous yeasts. The Vino Nobile’s are made from 100% Prugnolo Gentile, while their Chianti contains Prugnolo Gentile, Canaiolo, and Mammolo. And more recently they have released a range of natural wines under the label ‘Obvius’. Salcheto’s range all share accuracy, a great deal of finesse, and phenomenal drinkability.

Producer Fact SheetDetails

"The hauntingly dark and floral 2019 Nobile di Montepulciano Vecchie Viti del Salco blends exotic savory spices with crushed dried flowers, spiced cherries and ginger nuances. It’s silky to the extreme, with no hard edges in sight. A polished wave of ripe red berries rushes the palate, leaving a staining of minerality and fine tannins in its wake. The 2019 is potent and incredibly long, with a primary concentration that lasts through the long and structured finale. This is 100% Prugnolo Gentile (Sangiovese) from thirty-five-year-old vines, and it’s a stunner." 95 points, Eric Guido, Vinous (February 2023)

(Vino Nobile di Montepulciano 2018) "Expressive nose of pure black cherries, mint, hay, cinnamon and tobacco leafs. Floral palate with well judged oak and a pleasant textured lengthy finish." 95 points, Gold Medal, Decanter World Wine Awards 2021
