Friuli's Leading Lady

Our four new wines from Serena Palazzolo of Ronco del Gnemiz in Northeastern Italy show remarkable varietal style and character and are outstanding expressions of their terroir.

Ronco del Gnemiz wines are characterised by bright acidity in the whites, with a very careful use of oak, while the reds adopt a classic Bordeaux style and austere tannins. All wines are made with fully mature grapes which are never overripe, and subsequently the rich fruit is the focus for both reds and whites. Aided and advised by talented winemaker Christian Patat, it is the purity, length and display of true varietal style which places Serena’s wines among the gems of the Friuli Venezia Giulia region, and make them a testament to her commitment and passion.

Sauvignon Salici: This gorgeous Sauvignon shows less pungency than expected from the grape. There is a delightful minerality on the palate that gives the wine an interesting savoury, almost salty note to compliment the ripe white fruits and lighter green fruit notes. The wine is warm, rounded and powerful but equally refined with a fresh, focussed acidity. This is a truly fabulous and unique Sauvignon Blanc.

Chardonnay Ronco Basso: A textured and rounded Chardonnay that is a excellent regional example of the grape. Clean, pure and brimming with exotic fruit and lemon balm with buttery notes on the finish. A slight minerality ensures freshness and balances the very well integrated hints of oak.

Rosso di Jacopo: This velvety, purple wine of Merlot and Refosco shows both a powerful and complex nose with aromas of both ripe, sweet fruit and spices and a savoury restraint. The palate shows a similar fruit core with drying and spicy notes on the finish. The fine, dusty tannins are a good match for the round, silky structure. This is a wine with great focus.

Rosso del Gnemiz: Each grape in the Rosso del Gnemiz is given it's chance to shine. The separate contributuion of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon join forces to make a wine with stunning aromas on the nose; a wealth of dark fruits and an intense core of perfumed berries. Additional lighter, savoury, graphite and creamy notes form intriguing layers within the fruit. On the palate, the wine is rounded yet still fairly restrained with great depth, texture and complexity. The savoury, graphite component is mirrored on the palate along with the central flavours of crushed berries. The tannins are fine grain and drying and the finish is extraordinarily long.
